I’m obsessed with politics, with books and newspapers, I’m abundantly and unstoppably opinionated and I love the web - so I thought I’d better turn my vices to some sort of decent use by creating this site. At the same time as doing this, I’m writing my first book - while getting distracted by planning my second and third. As well as dispensing opinion and reviews here, I write about law at Head of Legal, and am a contributor to The Wardman Wire.

Previously I worked as a barrister, advising the government on European, human rights and public law for twelve years. I now teach EU and human rights law to fast-streamers and government lawyers at the National School of Government and to undergraduates at the Open University. I decide domain name disputes for Nominet and I'm a consultant to the Practical Law Company.

I’m originally and unmistakeably from the North, but I’ve been in London for most of the last twenty years. I live in England for many reasons, but real beer and pubs are two of the biggies. Otherwise I have soft spots for Berlin, Avignon and Oxford, Innsbruck, Paris and New York.
